Text of card

Until end of turn, double target creature's power X times.

Most Quandrix students fundamentally disagree with the concept of "enough."

Cards like Exponential Growth

Exponential Growth stands out in Magic: The Gathering as a unique aura spell that can swiftly turn the tides of a match. Its most direct analogue is perhaps Unnatural Growth, a card that also doubles the power of creatures but does so at the beginning of each combat. While Unnatural Growth is continuous, Exponential Growth requires a significant mana investment yet promises an overwhelming one-time damage output that can surprise opponents and end games on the spot.

Another potent option for multiplying a creature’s might is Doubling Season, which turns any +1/+1 counters or tokens you generate into an army by doubling them. However, this enchantment impacts the board state over time, unlike the immediate surge from Exponential Growth. Then there’s the older card, Berserk, which doubles a creature’s power in a way similar to Exponential Growth and includes the additional cost of sacrificing the creature at the end of the turn. Despite this downside, Berserk’s lower mana cost makes it a more accessible, if riskier, play.

Comparing these cards shows how Exponential Growth can claim a niche among MTG’s power-boosting spells, offering a scalable effect that can lead to explosive turns and serves as a formidable tool in the arsenal of green decks looking for a finisher.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: The power of Exponential Growth lies in its potential to turn a game around by massively boosting one creature’s power, often yielding a significant advantage. By taking an already sizeable creature and exponentially increasing its strength, it can pave the way for an overwhelming attack that can lead to victory.

Resource Acceleration: While Exponential Growth itself does not provide direct mana acceleration, the formidable threat it poses can accelerate your game plan. By demanding an immediate answer from your opponent, it can effectively divert resources away from their own strategic plays, giving you the upper hand.

Instant Speed: The ability to cast Exponential Growth at instant speed is pivotal. It allows for flexibility in combat, enabling surprise enhancements during the attack or block phase, which can lead to advantageous trades or even outright wins if the opposition is unprepared.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: While Exponential Growth can lead to game-changing moments by exponentially increasing a creature’s power, it does ask for a tangible sacrifice. Every use requires card commitment and, without proper hand management, could deplete your playing options prematurely.

Specific Mana Cost: A spell that stands out for its capability to snowball into a massive advantage, Exponential Growth, nevertheless, requires a precise mana arrangement. The necessity for both green mana and a variable amount of generic mana can sometimes constrain deck-building or postpone its casting.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Although the potential for generating overwhelming power is inherent in this card, the investment is equally substantial. Compared to other pump spells in the green color pie, Exponential Growth’s starting mana cost might be seen as a hefty price for its high-risk, high-reward nature.

Reasons to Include in Your Collection

Versatility: Exponential Growth can prove to be a game-changer in decks that amplify the power of a single creature. Its ability to scale with the game’s progression makes it adaptable to different stages, whether you need a moderate boost early on or a massive swing for a late-game victory.

Combo Potential: This card shines when partnered with creatures that have trample or can’t be blocked, turning a modest threat into a definitive finisher. Additionally, when combined with effects that double counters or spells, the potential for a one-turn kill becomes very real.

Meta-Relevance: In a meta that’s ripe with creature-based combat and board development, Exponential Growth offers a swift and often unsuspected route to snatch victory. Its relevance grows in environments where games can swing dramatically based on creature strength.

How to beat

Exponential Growth is a unique enchantment that can turn the tide of a match in Magic: The Gathering, given its potential to double a creature’s power several times. When facing this card, it’s essential to disrupt the synergy it creates. Removing the creature targeted by Exponential Growth before the ability resolves is key. This means having instant-speed removal or bounce spells at the ready. Cards like Swords to Plowshares or Unsummon can efficiently neutralize the threat before it escalates.

Countermagic is also highly effective in countering Exponential Growth itself or the creature it aims to enhance. Disallow and Negate are excellent examples of counterspells that can prevent Exponential Growth from ever hitting the battlefield or stopping the critical doubling ability from activating. In addition, keeping pressure on the opponent’s resources limits their ability to pay the cumulative costs associated with Exponential Growth, stifling its potential before it becomes overwhelming.

Lastly, maintaining board control with sweepers like Damnation or Supreme Verdict can ensure Exponential Growth has no targets to exploit. Balancing the timing of these strategies and utilizing board awareness can provide a consistent pathway to overpower this enchantment’s explosive nature.

Date Text
2021-04-16 Exponential Growth doubles a creature’s power sequentially, not all at the same time. For example, if X is 3 and you target a 2/2 creature, you will double its power once to 4, again to 8, and a third time to 16, making it a 16/2 creature until end of turn.
2021-04-16 If a creature’s power is less than 0 when it’s doubled, instead that creature gets -X/-0, where X is how much less than 0 its power is. For example, if an effect has given a 5/5 creature -7/-0 so that it’s a -2/5 creature, doubling its power makes it a -4/5 creature.
2021-04-16 If an effect instructs you to “double” a creature’s power, that creature gets +X/+0, where X is its power as that effect begins to apply. (This is not the value of X you chose when you cast the spell)
