Text of card

Put seven counters on Rasputin when brought into play. You may remove a counter to prevent one damage to Rasputin or add o1 to your mana pool. This ability is played as an interrupt. Put one counter on Rasputin during your upkeep if he started the turn untapped. You may not have more than seven of these counters on Rasputin at any time.

Cards like Rasputin Dreamweaver

Rasputin Dreamweaver carves a unique niche for itself among creature cards in Magic: The Gathering with its blend of mana generation and damage prevention abilities. When scanned for counterparts, one might compare it to Palladia-Mors, another creature that offers a multicolored mana boost, though without Rasputin’s damage-nullifying charm. Unlike Rasputin, Palladia-Mors provides a substantial combat presence but lacks the strategic versatility of storing mana for subsequent turns.

Examining other creatures like Gilded Lotus, we notice similarities in mana versatility, but Gilded Lotus serves strictly as a resource engine without the creature benefits. It replicates the mana diversity albeit as a non-creature artifact. Additionally, Dreamweaver’s damage prevention sets it apart from typical mana dorks like Birds of Paradise, which accelerate mana without offering defensive utility.

In terms of balance, Rasputin Dreamweaver stands out with dual qualities of mana ramp and protective measures, making it more than just a resource generator. This versatility could provide crucial advantages in both setting up defenses and executing key plays, solidifying its role within its specific MTG spectrum.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Rasputin Dreamweaver boasts a unique mechanic that refills your hand, offering seven dream counters that can be removed to add one white or blue mana to your mana pool. Each time you expend a counter, you’re effectively drawing into more utility without sacrificing card economy in your hand, creating a substantial card advantage over your opponent.

Resource Acceleration: Rasputin Dreamweaver excels as a resource accelerator in your deck. With the ability to generate additional mana through dream counters, you can advance your board state faster than usual. This can be particularly powerful in the mid to late game, allowing you to deploy high-cost spells earlier than your opponents would expect.

Instant Speed: Although Rasputin Dreamweaver itself is not an instant-speed card, the mana it generates through its dream counters can be used at instant speed. This means you have the flexibility to answer threats or make impactful plays during your opponent’s turn, significantly increasing your tactical options and keeping your adversaries on their toes.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: One obstacle when playing Rasputin Dreamweaver is the potential card disadvantage it can create. While the ability to store mana in the form of dream counters is beneficial, each use comes at the cost of discarding a card. This can deplete your hand and reduce options for subsequent turns, making it a delicate balance to manage resources efficiently.

Specific Mana Cost: Despite Rasputin Dreamweaver’s flexibility, its specific mana cost is an important consideration for deck builders. Requiring both white and blue mana, it calls for a deck that can reliably produce both types of mana early enough to cast it. This can sometimes limit the card to more control-oriented or two-color decks that focus on these colors.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: Sitting at a hefty six mana to cast, Rasputin Dreamweaver demands a significant investment. In formats where speed and efficiency are paramount, its cost may prove to be a liability, especially when facing off against decks that aim to win quickly or disrupt the board before Rasputin can make an impactful entrance.

Reasons to Include Rasputin Dreamweaver in Your Collection

Versatility: Rasputin Dreamweaver is not just any legendary creature card; its unique ability to generate and store mana across turns makes it a flexible addition to a wide variety of decks, especially in Commander format where it can truly shine as a leader or a supportive powerhouse.

Combo Potential: With its mana-generating capability and resilience to being sent back to the hand, Rasputin Dreamweaver acts as a beacon for combo enthusiasts. It interacts seamlessly with cards that capitalize on bounce or flicker mechanics, thus enabling powerful and potentially game-winning combos.

Meta-Relevance: Given the pace of the current meta, which often involves battling through disruptive plays, Rasputin Dreamweaver provides a persistent presence on the battlefield. Its ability to store mana makes it relevant in matches where timing and resources can tip the scales in your favor.

How to Beat

Rasputin Dreamweaver, with its ability to store mana in the form of dream counters, presents a unique challenge in Magic: The Gathering. When tailoring a strategy against Rasputin, one approach is to focus on removing its dream counters, which starves the opponent of extra mana, reducing the chances of them casting high-cost spells. Creature removal spells that exile or send Rasputin back to the hand are particularly useful because they prevent its dream counters from refilling.

Another tactic involves countering Rasputin’s activation and cast. Utilizing spells such as Counterspell or Disallow can disrupt your opponent’s play and leave Rasputin trapped in the hand or stack without providing any advantage. Similarly, employing discard mechanics forces your rival to give up Rasputin Dreamweaver before it can hit the board, curbing its potential influence on the game.

When facing this formidable card, remember that adaptability and strategic disruption are key. Denying your opponent the chance to fully leverage Rasputin’s mana-generating capability can tilt the game in your favor, ensuring that this legend remains more of a myth than a concrete threat on the battlefield.

Date Text
2009-10-01 If a number of dream counters would be put on Rasputin Dreamweaver for any reason that would bring the total number of dream counters on it to eight or more, the total number of dream counters on it is brought to seven instead.
2009-10-01 If a permanent with eight or more dream counters on it becomes a copy of Rasputin Dreamweaver (or just gains its last ability), all dream counters except seven are removed from it as a state-based action.
2009-10-01 The fourth ability has an “intervening ‘if’ clause,” so it won’t trigger at all unless Rasputin Dreamweaver started the turn untapped.
