Cards like Worldgorger Dragon

The allure of Worldgorger Dragon is undeniable in the roster of Magic: The Gathering’s powerhouse creatures. Its closest analogues include the likes of Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead—both of which reanimate creatures from the graveyard. What sets Worldgorger Dragon apart from these two is its unique interaction with other permanents. While Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead focus solely on the creatures they bring back, Worldgorger Dragon exiles all other permanents you control upon entering the battlefield, only to bring them back with its departure—a high-risk maneuver capable of creating potentially game-ending combos.

Another card worth mentioning is Bladewing the Risen, an iconic dragon that also reanimates from the graveyard. However, Bladewing brings other dragons along with it, not impacting non-creature permanents. It’s a strategic difference since Worldgorger Dragon affects all permaments, offering a level of utility Bladewing can’t match, although it’s less risky to play. This ability to repeatedly flicker all permanents opens up strategies not possible with most other cards, including infinite mana combos with the right setup.

Comparing Worldgorger Dragon’s unique effect to its kindred spirits, it is clear the card stands as a singular choice for those crafting a deck around graveyard interaction and combo potential. With its distinct advantage of resetting and triggering enters-the-battlefield effects en masse, Worldgorger Dragon commands a unique position within MTG’s creature lineup.

Card Pros

Card Advantage: Worldgorger Dragon creates an opportunity for massive card advantage, especially when paired with cards that draw upon entering the battlefield or leaving the battlefield. This symbiotic relationship can lead to drawing multiple cards, potentially refilling your hand with useful spells and options at each loop of its ability.

Resource Acceleration: When Worldgorger Dragon enters the battlefield, it exiles all other permanents you control. If you manipulate the sequence correctly, this can act as a form of resource acceleration by untapping your lands multiple times within one turn. With the right setup, it allows for an enormous amount of mana to be generated, which can be channeled into game-winning spells or overwhelming board states.

Instant Speed: While Worldgorger Dragon itself may not have instant speed, its combo potential often relies on instant speed actions such as using a reanimation spell to bring it back during an opponent’s end step. This paves the way for explosive turns out of nowhere, catching adversaries unprepared for the resurgence of your board presence and the impending exploitation of the dragon’s potent ability.

Card Cons

Discard Requirement: Worldgorger Dragon demands sacrificing all other permanents you control, a heavy toll that leaves you vulnerable if the dragon is removed from the battlefield.

Specific Mana Cost: Casting Worldgorger Dragon requires a precise combination of three mana, including two red, which may be challenging to achieve consistently in multi-color decks.

Comparatively High Mana Cost: With a casting cost of six mana, Worldgorger Dragon competes with other high-impact cards in your deck, potentially limiting your strategic plays in the early to mid-game stages.

Reasons to Include Worldgorger Dragon in Your Collection

Versatility: Worldgorger Dragon offers a unique layer of versatility to any deck. Its ability to exile other permanents you control can be utilized to protect them from removal, evade opponent strategies, or simply reset their entering-the-battlefield triggers for additional value.

Combo Potential: This card is notorious for its combo potential, particularly with “Animate Dead” or similar reanimation spells, allowing for infinite mana generation. This combo can then be harnessed to execute game-winning plays, making the Dragon a combo piece that can’t be ignored.

Meta-Relevance: As metagames evolve, Worldgorger Dragon holds a slot in competitive environments where its explosive play can capsize even the most stable opponent’s game plan. Whether protecting your board state or conjuring a surprising win, including Worldgorger Dragon in your collection ensures you have the means to adapt to various meta shifts.

How to beat

Worldgorger Dragon poses a unique and intense challenge to players in the MTG arena. More than just a formidable flying beast, its entrance and exit from the battlefield have the potential to set up infinite combos that can end games. When it enters the battlefield, it exiles all other permanents you control, and when it leaves, those cards return to the battlefield.

Disrupting the synergy that Worldgorger Dragon thrives on is key to overcoming its power. Graveyard removal spells like Rest in Peace prevent the dragon from initiating its infamous loop by exiling it as soon as it hits the graveyard. Instant-speed removal that can target the dragon in response to its enter-the-battlefield trigger, such as Swords to Plowshares, also disrupts its combo potential by ensuring the permanents it would exile never actually leave play.

Countering the spells that bring Worldgorger Dragon to the battlefield is another strong strategy. Counterspells like Negate or Dovin’s Veto can stop the enabler spells in their tracks, preventing the combo from initiating. Building a strategy with a mix of graveyard hate, instant-speed interaction, and spell counters can significantly diminish the threat of Worldgorger Dragon in your matches.

Date Text
2022-12-08 If Worldgorger Dragon leaves the battlefield before its enters-the-battlefield ability resolves, the “leaves-the-battlefield” ability will trigger and resolve first. It won’t return anything. Then the enters-the-battlefield ability will exile all other permanents you control indefinitely.
2022-12-08 If an Aura is exiled with Worldgorger Dragon and then returns to the battlefield, the player who controls the Aura as it enters the battlefield chooses what it will enchant. An Aura put onto the battlefield this way doesn’t target anything (so it could be attached to an opponent’s permanent with hexproof, for example), but the Aura’s enchant ability restricts what it can be attached to. If the Aura can’t legally be attached to anything, it stays exiled. It can’t enter the battlefield enchanting a permanent that enters the battlefield at the same time.
